This weekend we celebrated my daughter’s 6th birthday with a (Lorax theme) strawberry picking party at Tanaka Farms in Irvine, California.  Guests enjoyed a tractor ride around the organic farm and sampled fresh vegetables during the tour.  At the end of the tour, all of the kids picked fresh organic strawberries to eat – and a container to bring home.

Here are some of the vegetables that were sampled: carrots, yellow string beans, green onions, sweet corn, and strawberries of course!

There were rows and rows of organic strawberry plants.

After we finished picking delicious strawberries, it was time for the party!  For lunch, there was coldcuts, cheese, and rolls, as well as an antipasto salad.  There was a candy buffet filled with naturally colored chocolate candies, home-made candy dots on paper strips, organic chocolate graham bears, all natural mini marshmallows, whole grain cheddar goldfish crackers, and rock candy sticks in orange, yellow, and light blue!  Naturally colored yellow chocolate mustache lollipops were displayed as centerpieces on the tables.  Saving the best for last…. homemade cupcakes with naturally colored buttercream frosting and truffula tree cake pops (also naturally colored).

I know many of you are interested in planning a Lorax themed party, so I will post lots of pictures to give you ideas for your own event.

Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun to put together, and I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Most of the Lorax theme parties look very similar, so I was excited to add some new ideas to the world wide web table. ;)

I love it. Do you think it would work using buttercream frosting instead of royal icing? Never used it, but imagine it dries harder than regular buttercream. What tip did you use to make the truffula tree tufts? I love pops coming out of a cup cake and skip making the cake!

Thanks! It’s definitely a lot more fun than a big ol’ birthday cake. You are right, the royal icing dries much harder than the buttercream. I used a #2 tip and made each tuft separately. It’s a lot of work, but looks good in the end. Since I had to transport these cake pops to the farm, the hard royal icing helped keep the tufts from getting smooshed or melting. The buttercream may work – I found an example of something similar on a cupcake here –> http://cakejournal.com/cake-lounge/fury-cupcake-monsters/ She used buttercream and a grass tip. I’m not sure how the tufts will hold up towards the bottom/underside of the cake pop, especially if the buttercream softens. But honestly, the buttercream may be easier to eat off the cake pop, since the royal icing gets quite hard.

Ok great. Thanks for the info and thanks for the other link. I really appreciate it. My son is turning three but is obsessed with Dr. Seuss, runs around the house reciting the lines from the Lorax as well as others. I think this will be just right. Plus the mustaches are hilarious. I also love your big Truffula tufts. So creative! Thanks again

Can you email me the cost of the birthday party @ Tanaka farm? How many kids and adult can join? Any activities @ the farm included or need to pay extra? My son is turning 4 and he loves animals farm.I’m appreciated and thanks so much.

You need at least 10 kids to get the discounted rate, which is $12 per child and $6 per adult. The $12 admission includes the tractor-pulled wagon ride, guided tour of the farm, taste testing vegetables picked during the tour, and a container for your fresh picked strawberries. $6 admission for adults includes everything except the container for strawberries. If they want to pick a container of strawberries, they will have to pay the $12 admission rate. The same goes for kids 2 yrs and under – they are free, but must pay the $12 rate for the container. It doesn’t cost anything additional to reserve a tent, but you will need to contact them in advance to reserve one. They had a small petting zoo area which was free as well. There aren’t very many farm animals, as they are mainly a produce farm, not for dairy or meat. You may want to confirm with them that the petting zoo is still open if that’s a big part of his party. Throughout the year, they offer different tours of the farm depending on the season and what’s growing. In the fall is a pumpkin picking tour, which includes a pumpkin and bag of pick-your-own veggies to bring home. Springtime is the strawberry tours, and summertime is the watermelon tours. The prices posted above are for the strawberry tour. I don’t know the specific costs for the other tours. I hope that helps!
